Students take turns building on a developing story. Circle stories promote critical listening and creative thinking. Recall and prediction skills are enhanced as students must carefully monitor the developing story before adding a logical extension to the previous speaker\u2019s contribution. Students become aware of the narrative form and practise storytelling.<\/p>\n\t<p><span class=\"Blue_hi-lite_noItalics\"><strong>Materials:<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"Blue_hi-lite\"><br>\n\t\t<\/span>&#8211; familiar story<br>\n\t\t&#8211; story stick or microphone<br>\n\t  <span class=\"Blue_hi-lite_noItalics\"><strong>Grouping:<\/strong><\/span> whole class or small group <\/p>\n\t\t<h2 id=\"Playing_the_Game\">\n\t\t<span class=\"heading2\">Playing the Game<\/span> <\/h2>\n\t\t<ol>\n\t\t<li>Have students sit in a circle facing each other. <\/li>\n\t\t<li>Reread a familiar story and discuss the characters, setting, plot, problem, and solution.<br>\n\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t<li>Explain that the group is going to create a circle story\u2014a story which is told one person at a time. The first person begins the story and then each subsequent storyteller adds further details until the story is \u2018passed\u2019 from person to person and comes back to the original storyteller. <\/li>\n\t\t<li>Demonstrate how to use the story stick or microphone when retelling the story. Remind students to listen carefully and think about the story so that what they say joins onto what the last person has said.<\/li>\n\t\t<li>Begin storytelling and provide assistance to those who require additional support. Pictures and story maps are effective tools to prompt student input.<br>\n\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t<\/ol>\n\t\t<h3 id=\"Variations\"><span class=\"author\">Variations<\/span>\n\t\t<\/h3>\n\t\t<ul>\n\t\t<li>Have students create their own stories and tell the story in circle story format.<\/li>\n\t\t<\/ul>\n\n\n<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This activity is a variation of cooperative story-making.
