The game promotes creative thinking, problem-solving, and strategic action. Positive relationships are developed because the social skills of taking turns and cooperation are reinforced.<\/p>\n  <p><span class=\"Blue_hi-lite_noItalics\"><strong>Materials:<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"Blue_hi-lite\"><br>\n\t\t<\/span>&#8211; one copy of <a href=\"\/lpeyx-teaching-support\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/pdfs\/grade-1\/pdfs\/oralanguagegames\/pattern_catag_gamecards.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pattern Categories Game Card<\/a> for each student<br>\n\t\t&#8211; one copy of <a href=\"\/lpeyx-teaching-support\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/pdfs\/grade-1\/pdfs\/oralanguagegames\/pattern_catag_answers.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pattern Categories Answer Sheet<\/a> <br>\n\t\t&#8211; two-minute timer<br>\n\t<span class=\"Blue_hi-lite_noItalics\"><strong>Grouping:<\/strong><\/span> small groups of 3 or 4 players<\/p>\n\t\t<p><span class=\"author\"><strong>Note:<\/strong><\/span> You may choose to laminate the answer sheets and provide dry-erase markers for students to use.<br>\n\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t<h2 id=\"Introducing_the_Game\"><span class=\"heading2\">Introducing the Game<\/span> <\/h2>\n\t\t<p>The game is played in three rounds.<\/p>\n\t\t<ol>\n\t\t<li>Explain that the object of the game is to think of words for the specific pattern categories. <\/li>\n\t\t<li>Ensure that each player has a Pattern Categories Game Card and a Pattern Categories Answer Sheet. Explain that the students are to think of words that contain the patterns for each of the eight examples. Remind them they have two minutes to record their eight answers.<\/li>\n\t\t<li>Set the timer for two minutes.<\/li>\n\t\t<li>Demonstrate how to come up with a word that fits each of the categories in Game 1 on the game card. Have students fill in the first column of the answer sheet under Round 1. Explain that answers must fit the category and must use the given patterns.<\/li>\n\t\t<li>Show how to score the round. Have players take turns reading their answers aloud for each category. Demonstrate how to score the answer sheets by circling an acceptable answer that <strong>does not match<\/strong> any other player\u2019s answer (e.g., If the pattern is \u2018at\u2019 and two players say \u2018cat\u2019 and two other players say \u2018rat\u2019 and \u2018fat,\u2019 the players with similar answers do not score circle their words; only the players with unique answers circle their words.). <\/li>\n\t\t<li>Continue having students read their answers until all eight categories have been scored. Direct students to score one point for each circled answer and to record their score at the bottom of the column for Round 1 (for Game 1 on the game card).<\/li>\n\t\t<li>Start a second round. Encourage students to think of different words that contain the letters from the same pattern categories as in Round 1.<br>\n\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t<li>Set the timer for two minutes and have students fill in their new answers under Round 2 on the answer sheet.<\/li>\n\t\t<li>Play the game for three rounds. The player with the highest total for the three rounds is the winner. <br>\n\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t<\/ol>\n\t\t<h2 id=\"Playing_the_Game\" class=\"heading2\">Playing the Game<\/h2>\n\t\t<ol>\n\t\t<li>Each player needs a Pattern Categories Game Card and a Pattern Categories Answer Sheet.<\/li>\n\t\t<li>Set the timer for two minutes.<\/li>\n\t\t<li>Fill in the first column of the answer sheet using the patterns for Game 1 on the game card. Answers must fit the pattern given.<\/li>\n\t\t<li>Score the round. Take turns reading your answers aloud for each number. Score your own answer sheets by circling an acceptable answer that <strong>does not match<\/strong> any other player\u2019s answer. <\/li>\n\t\t<li>Continue reading answers until all 8 categories have been scored. Score one point for each circled answer. Record your score at the bottom of the column.<\/li>\n\t\t<li>Start a second round. Use the same patterns as in Round 1 (for Game 1 on the game card).<\/li>\n\t\t<li>Set the timer for two minutes and fill in your new answers on the next column of your answer sheet.<\/li>\n\t\t<li>Play the game for three rounds. The player with the highest total for the three rounds is the winner. <\/li>\n\t\t<li>Get another answer sheet or wipe off your board. Play another game using the patterns for Game 2 of the game card. Again, you will play three rounds using these patterns.<\/li>\n\t\t<\/ol>\n\t\t<h3 id=\"Important_RulesAcceptable_Answers\" class=\"Heading3\">Important Rules:<br><p>\nAcceptable Answers <\/p><\/h3> \n\u2013 The same answer cannot be given twice in one round. A player cannot answer \u2018push\u2019 for both \u2018us\u2019 and \u2018ush.\u2019\n\t\t<h3 id=\"Important_RulesChallenging_Answers\" class=\"Heading3\">Challenging Answers<\/h3> \n\u2013 While answers are being read, other players may challenge their acceptability. Players who accept the answer give a thumgs-up sign. Players who do not accept the answer give a thumbs-down sign.
