Students choose a word card from each section (brown, red, blue, and green) to make a sentence. (e.g., “The big dog ran.”)

Read the sentence aloud.

Spin the direction spinner and follow the direction. For example, if the spinner says, ‘Change a word,’ then choose one word in the sentence to change (e.g., “The big dog ran.”).

Ask students to replace the underlined word with another word that would mean something very similar (e.g., ‘big’ = ‘huge,’ ‘large,’ ‘enormous,’ ‘gigantic’).

Model how to write the new word on a word card and rearrange the sentence, placing the original word from the sentence in a discard pile.

Spin the spinner again and follow the direction. For example, if the spinner says, ‘Add a word,’ a word is added to the sentence (e.g., “The huge dog ran quickly.”). Print the word on a blank word card and add it to the sentence.

Show students several different ways to change words. For example, the word ‘dog’ could be changed to make it more descriptive, telling us what kind of dog (e.g., “The big German Shepherd ran.”).

Discuss the other options on the spinner: ‘your choice’ where you can choose to add or change a word in the sentence, ‘miss a turn’ where you must forfeit your turn and pass the spinner to the next player, and ‘take another turn’ where you get to spin the spinner again.

Explain that the game is continued until the sentence is seven words in length and all words except ‘The’ or ‘A’ is different from the original sentence.

Note: You can change the length of the final sentence to make the game easier or more challenging.

Playing the Game

Choose four cards to make your first sentence. Choose one card from each section (brown, red, blue, and green).

Read your sentence aloud to make sure it makes sense.

Decide who will go first.

Spin the spinner and follow the directions (e.g., ‘Change a word,’ ‘Add a word,’ ‘Your choice,’ ‘Miss a turn,’ or ‘Take another turn’).

Print your new word on a blank word card and make your new sentence. If you cannot think of a word, ask one of the group members for help. When a group member provides a word that is used by another player, he or she gets to add another word to his or her sentence.

Have your partner or group read your sentence to ensure it makes sense.

Pass the spinner to the next person.

Continue playing the game until one player has a sentence that is seven words in length.

This game develops oral language through vocabulary building.
