{"id":609,"date":"2021-10-08T13:02:15","date_gmt":"2021-10-08T17:02:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www3.scholastic.ca\/lpeyx-teaching-support\/?page_id=609"},"modified":"2022-03-25T13:12:35","modified_gmt":"2022-03-25T17:12:35","slug":"retelling-personal-experiences","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www3.scholastic.ca\/lpeyx-teaching-support\/grade-1\/oral-language-kit\/puppet-lessons\/retelling-personal-experiences\/","title":{"rendered":"Retelling Personal Experiences"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div id=\"Section-One\" class=\"section\">\n\n\t\t\n\t\t<p><span class=\"author\"><strong>Oral Language Teaching Strategy<\/strong>:<\/span><br>\n  <a href=\"\/lpeyx-teaching-support\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/pdfs\/grade-1\/pdfs\/gr1_toolkit_oralanguagekit.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Model Eye Contact When Listening<\/a> Model powerful listening by making eye contact with the person who is speaking to you.<\/p>\n  <p><span class=\"author\"><strong>Time:<\/strong><\/span> 20\u201325 minutes<br>\n\t\t<span class=\"author\"><strong>Materials:<\/strong><\/span><br>\n\t\t&#8211; lady puppet<br>\n\t\t&#8211; boy puppet<br>\n\t\t&#8211; 2 small golf clubs (pencils with \u2018club ends\u2019 made from modelling clay)<br>\n\t\t&#8211; 1 red and 1 yellow golf ball (made from modelling clay)<br>\n\t\t<span class=\"author\"><strong>Grouping:<\/strong><\/span> whole class and partners<br>\n\t\t<span class=\"author\"><strong>Assessment:<\/strong><\/span> Use selected items from the <a href=\"\/lpeyx-teaching-support\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/pdfs\/grade-1\/pdfs\/assessmentscale_BLM.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Grade One Oral Language Assessment Scale<\/a>  for recording your observations.\n\t\t<\/p>\n\n\n<div id=\"Section-Two\" class=\"section\"><\/div>\n\n\n\t\t<h2 id=\"BEFORE_MODELLING\" class=\"heading2\"><a name=\"beforemodelling\" id=\"beforemodelling\"><\/a>BEFORE MODELLING\n\t\t<\/h2>\n\t\t<ul>\n\t\t<li>Introduce the lesson\u2019s focus of using puppets for retelling personal experiences. Explain to students that you are going to use puppets to retell something that happened to yourself. (Substitute an experience of your own for your demonstration lesson.)\n\t\t  \n\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t<\/ul>\n\t\t<p class=\"Blue_hi-lite\"><strong><i>Setting a Purpose<\/i><\/strong><\/p>  \n\t\t<ul>\n\t\t<li>Establish the purpose for listening and viewing. Ask students to listen to your story to find out what happened to you.\n\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t<\/ul>\n\n\n<div id=\"Section-Three\" class=\"section\"><\/div>\n\n\n\t\t<h2 class=\"heading2\"><a name=\"duringmodelling\" id=\"duringmodelling\"><\/a>DURING MODELLING<\/h2>\n\t\t<ul>\n\t\t<li>Retell a personal experience using the puppets, acting out events when appropriate. The following is an example of a possible retelling:<\/li><\/ul>\n\t\n\t<blockquote><p><span class=\"Blue_hi-lite\"><strong>Lady Puppet<\/strong>: <\/span>Alex and I went to play mini-golf at the mall. (Lady puppet on one hand and boy puppet on the other.) <br>\n\t\t<span class=\"Blue_hi-lite\"><strong>Boy Puppet<\/strong>:<\/span> We paid for our golf clubs and golf balls and started to play. (Add actions.) <br>\n\t\t<span class=\"Blue_hi-lite\"><strong>Lady<\/strong>:<\/span> Whenever we couldn\u2019t see where the hole was, Alex ran ahead to find it. (Boy runs to look, points, and comes back.)With two holes to go, Alex aimed and hit his red golf ball. (Add boy\u2019s actions.) It disappeared around the corner towards the hole. <br>\n\t\t<span class=\"Blue_hi-lite\"><strong>Boy<\/strong>: <\/span>I ran to see if my ball had reached the hole. (Add actions.) No, not yet. <br>\n\t\t<span class=\"Blue_hi-lite\"><strong>Lady<\/strong>: <\/span>My turn came next. I warned Alex to stand back, and then I gave my yellow golf ball a mighty swipe. (Add actions.) When Alex and I went around the corner, we could only see his red ball close to the hole. (Point.) My yellow one wasn\u2019t there. Maybe it had gone straight in the hole!<br>\n\t\t<span class=\"Blue_hi-lite\"><strong>Boy<\/strong>:<\/span> We peered down the hole. (Puppets look down.) It was empty. Just then, we heard somebody yell, \u201cWhere did this yellow ball come from?\u201d(Jerk puppets heads up.)<br>\n\t\t<span class=\"Blue_hi-lite\"><strong>Lady<\/strong>:<\/span> My yellow ball had gone right over to the next hole! (Hands over eyes.) Thank goodness it hadn\u2019t hit anybody! I said, \u201cSorry!\u201d but I felt quite shaky. (Shake.)<br>\n\t\t<span class=\"Blue_hi-lite\"><strong>Boy<\/strong>:<\/span> I said, \u201cLet\u2019s go for ice cream, Mom! That\u2019ll make you feel better!\u201d<br>\n\t\t<span class=\"Blue_hi-lite\"><strong>Lady<\/strong>:<\/span> We returned our balls and clubs (Add actions.) and went for ice cream.<br>\n\t\t<span class=\"Blue_hi-lite\"><strong>Boy<\/strong>:<\/span> I had a chocolate strawberry ripple. (Enthusiastic licking action.) YUM! Mom had a mixed berries ice cream. (Careful licking action.) I asked Mom if we could have another game of mini-golf soon.<br>\n\t\t<span class=\"Blue_hi-lite\"><strong>Lady<\/strong>:<\/span> I said \u201cYes! And next time, I\u2019m going to hit my golf ball very carefully!\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"Section-Four\" class=\"section\"><\/div>\n\t\n\t\t\n\t\t\n\t\t<h2 id=\"AFTER_MODELLING\" class=\"heading2\"><a name=\"aftermodelling\" id=\"aftermodelling\"><\/a>AFTER MODELLING\n\t\t<\/h2>\n\t\t<ul>\n\t\t<li>Revisit the purpose for listening and viewing. Ask students to tell a partner about what happened. Then ask how you retold the story.  Offer prompts:\n\t\t<ul>\n\t\t<li>Do you think Mom will enjoy playing mini-golf next time? Why do you think that?<\/li>\n\t\t<li>Did Alex enjoy his ice cream? How do you know that?<\/li>\n\t\t<li>How did Mom and Alex tell their story? (They used actions to show what they did.)<\/li>\n\t\t<li>How did their voices sound?    <\/li>\n\t\t<\/ul>\n\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t<\/ul>\n\t\t<ul>\n\t\t<li><p class=\"speach-bubble speach-bubble-long left\">Are you noticing that we look at each other \nas I talk? It\u2019s always good to look at people you\u2019re listening or talking to. Remember to do that when you\u2019re working with your partner.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tModel good eye contact as students share their ideas with you. As you listen to the partners discussing their ideas, provide positive feedback when you notice a student looking directly at the speaker and listening carefully. <\/li>\n\t\t<\/ul>\n\t\t<ul>\n\t\t<li>\n\t\t\t<p class=\"speach-bubble speach-bubble-long left\">Think of something you\u2019ve done that you could \nretell with puppets. It could be about learning a new game, a school field trip, or a TV show you\u2019ve all seen. When you\u2019ve had time to practise your \nplay, you can share it with the rest of the class.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tDuring centre time, ask students to work in pairs to think of a shared personal experience they could make into a puppet play.  <\/li>\n\t\t<\/ul>\n\t\t<ul>\n\t\t<li>\n\t\t\t<p class=\"speach-bubble speach-bubble-long left\">When Ryan and Mei are working out what to say for their retelling performance they\u2019re looking straight at each other as they listen and talk. Well done, you two!
