{"id":607,"date":"2021-10-07T16:52:50","date_gmt":"2021-10-07T20:52:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www3.scholastic.ca\/lpeyx-teaching-support\/?page_id=607"},"modified":"2022-03-25T13:11:57","modified_gmt":"2022-03-25T17:11:57","slug":"demonstrating","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www3.scholastic.ca\/lpeyx-teaching-support\/grade-1\/oral-language-kit\/puppet-lessons\/demonstrating\/","title":{"rendered":"Demonstrating"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div id=\"Section-One\" class=\"section\">\n\n\t\t\n\t\t<p><span class=\"author\"><strong>Oral Language Teaching Strategy:<\/strong><\/span><br>\n\t\t<a href=\"\/lpeyx-teaching-support\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/pdfs\/grade-1\/pdfs\/gr1_toolkit_oralanguagekit.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Model Good Language Use<\/a> Clarify and model good language use, without correcting, when individuals need support.    \n  <\/p><p><span class=\"author\"><strong>Time:<\/strong><\/span> 20\u201325 minutes<br>\n\t\t<span class=\"author\"><strong>Materials:<\/strong><\/span><br>\n\t\t&#8211; \u201cCaring for Speedy\u201d (Shared Reading <em>School Days<\/em> magazine from <em>Grade One Literacy Place for the Early Years<\/em>)<br>\n\t\t&#8211; two puppets (one male and one female)<br>\n\t\t&#8211; props such as a small stuffed animal or piece of fur to represent Speedy, a small water bottle, a container to represent a cage (e.g., plastic fruit basket), and some small toys for a hamster to play with.<br>\n\t\t&#8211; optional prop: cut out of a TV screen made from a three-sided box<br>\n\t\t<span class=\"author\"><strong>Grouping:<\/strong><\/span> whole class, partners, and small groups<br>\n\t\t<span class=\"author\"><strong>Assessment:<\/strong><\/span> Use selected items from the <a href=\"\/lpeyx-teaching-support\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/pdfs\/grade-1\/pdfs\/assessmentscale_BLM.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Grade One Oral Language Assessment Scale<\/a> and record your observations.    \n\t\t<\/p><p><span class=\"author\"><strong>Teaching Tip:<\/strong><\/span> Although \u201cCaring for Speedy\u201d is used for this lesson, you can substitute any procedural text such as <em>Making Ice Cream<\/em> (Shared Reading text from <em>Grade One Literacy Place for the Early Years<\/em>).    \n\t\t\n\n<\/p><div id=\"Section-Two\" class=\"section\"><\/div>\n\n\n\t\t<h2 id=\"BEFORE_MODELLING\" class=\"heading2\"><a name=\"beforemodelling\" id=\"beforemodelling\"><\/a>BEFORE MODELLING<\/h2>\n\t\t<ul>\n\t\t<li>Ask students if they\u2019ve seen a television program that shows how to cook something, or a demonstration in a store that helps you make a birdhouse or a bookshelf, or a person who shows you how to play a game. Ask students to talk with partners about the types of demonstrations they have seen and where they have seen them.<\/li>\n\t\t<\/ul>\n\t\t<ul>\n\t\t<li>\n\t\t\t<p class=\"speach-bubble left\">So you saw a show where they demonstrated how to make pizza. At Brownies they showed you how to weave. Your soccer coach showed you how to dribble the ball.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tShare ideas as a class and record the types of demonstrations the students have seen.<br>\n\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t<\/ul>\n\t\t<ul>\n\t\t<li>Observe students\u2019 language use and take opportunities to model appropriate structures and vocabulary.\n\t\t\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t<p class=\"speach-bubble top\">\n\t\t\t<strong>Sophia<\/strong>: At daycare they shown me how to make a picture with spaghetti and all these food shapes like spaghetti.\n\t\t\t\t<br>\n<br>\n\t\t\t<strong>Teacher<\/strong>: So they showed you how to make a picture out of pasta shapes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t<li>Read or reread \u201cCaring for Speedy\u201d with the class. Ask students to discuss with a partner how they would take care of Speedy. Have a few partners share ideas with the class. Offer prompts:\n\t\t<ul>\n\t\t<li>What would you need to demonstrate how to take care of Speedy?<\/li>\n\t\t<li>How would you make your demonstration interesting?<\/li>\n\t\t<li>What kind of voice would you use? Why?<\/li>\n\t\t<li>Would you demonstrate on your own or with someone else?    <\/li>\n\t\t<\/ul>\n\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t<\/ul>\n\t\t<p class=\"Blue_hi-lite\"><strong><i>Setting a Purpose<\/i><\/strong><\/p>\n\t\t<ul>\n\t\t<li>\n\t\t\t<p class=\"speach-bubble left\">Look out for the voices I use and the props that help me, and see how I use the puppets to demonstrate what I\u2019m saying.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tEstablish the purpose for watching and listening as you use two puppets to demonstrate how to take care of Speedy on a television show about pets. \n\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t<\/ul>\n\n<div id=\"Section-Three\" class=\"section\"><\/div>\n\n\n\t\t<h2 id=\"DURING_MODELLING\" class=\"heading2\"><a name=\"duringmodelling\" id=\"duringmodelling\"><\/a>DURING MODELLING\n\t\t<\/h2>\n\t\t\n\t\t<ul>\n\t\t<li>You might set up a small TV screen to act as a stage (three sides of a cardboard box with a screen cut out of the front).<\/li>\n\t\t<\/ul>\n\t\t<ul>\n\t\t<li>\n\t\t  <p class=\"speach-bubble left\">Hello everyone. Welcome to our weekly show, Our Pets. I am your host Charlie Sung. Today I\u2019d like to introduce you to our expert on hamsters, Matilda Hernandez. She\u2019s going to tell you important \ninformation about how to take care of your hamster.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tUse two puppets, one as an interviewer and the other as a demonstrator.<br>\n\t\t\n\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t<\/ul>\n\t\t<ul>\n\t\t<li> Use basic props including a small stuffed animal or piece of furry cloth to represent the hamster. Conduct a dialogue between the interviewer and the expert to demonstrate how to take care of a hamster. Vary the voices for your characters and keep the demonstration simple as you cover key points.<\/li>\n\t\t<\/ul>\n\t\t\n\n\t\t\n<div id=\"Section-Four\" class=\"section\"><\/div>\n\n\t\t\n\t\t<h2 id=\"AFTER_MODELLING\" class=\"heading2\"><a name=\"aftermodelling\" id=\"aftermodelling\"><\/a>AFTER MODELLING\n\t\t<\/h2>\n\t\t\n\t\t<ul>\n\t\t<li>Revisit the purpose for watching and listening by asking the students how you demonstrated taking care of Speedy. Students can talk about their ideas with their partners and then share them with the class. Offer prompts to stimulate discussion:\n\t\t<ul>\n\t\t<li>What did you like about the demonstration?<\/li>\n\t\t<li>Was it clear? Why do you think that?<\/li>\n\t\t<li>What did you notice about the voices\/the use of props\/the introduction and conclusion?<\/li>\n\t\t<li>Was there anything you would change? Why?    <\/li>\n\t\t<\/ul>\n\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t<\/ul>\n\t\t<ul>\n\t\t<li>\n\t\t<p>As you observe the discussions, model appropriate language structures and vocabulary where necessary.<br>\n\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t<p class=\"speach-bubble top\">\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rashid<\/strong>: Yesterday it drinked all the water.<br>\n<br>\n\n \t\t\t\t<strong>Teacher<\/strong>: So that\u2019s why I need to fill the bottle because yesterday it drank all the water. <\/p>\n\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t<\/ul>\n\t\t<ul>\n\t\t<li>Tell students that they can use the puppets and props to do other demonstrations during centre time. They might work with a partner or in a small group.
