Three Little Letters is a fun game that promotes the development of phonemic awareness. The game also encourages the phoneme\u2013phonics connection and provides practise in blending sounds into a simple word. Comprehension and use of vocabulary is stressed through the creation of meaningful sentences containing the target word.<\/p>\n <p><span class=\"Blue_hi-lite\"><strong>Materials<\/strong>:<br>\n   <\/span>&#8211; <a href=\"\/lpeyx-teaching-support\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/pdfs\/lettercards-large.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">large letter cards<\/a>\n   <br>\n   &#8211; pocket chart to display letters<br>\n   &#8211; \n   variety of CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words (e.g., \u2018dog,\u2019 \u2018top,\u2019 \u2018fun,\u2019 \u2018sit,\u2019 <br>\n   <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"img\/textspacer.png\" width=\"11\" height=\"9\">\u2018cat,\u2019 \u2018rip,\u2019 \u2018bat,\u2019 \u2018hop,\u2019 \u2018got,\u2019 \u2018kit,\u2019 \u2018lap,\u2019 etc.)<br>\n   <strong class=\"Blue_hi-lite\">Grouping: <\/strong>whole class <\/p>\n <h2 id=\"Playing_the_Game\"><span class=\"heading2\">Playing the Game<\/span>\n<\/h2>\n <ol>\n   <li>Choose a CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) decodable word and the accompanying letters.<\/li>\n   <li>Chant the following lyrics to the rhythm of \u201cFive Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed\u201d:     <br>\n       <br>\n    <p><strong>&emsp;&emsp;&emsp;&emsp;Three little letters sitting in a tree<br>\n&emsp;&emsp;&emsp;&emsp;Singing, \u201cChildren, children, you can\u2019t read me.\u201d<br>\n&emsp;&emsp;&emsp;&emsp;Along come the children, quiet as can be<br>\n&emsp;&emsp;&emsp;&emsp;And snap a letter right out of that tree. <\/strong><\/p>\n   <\/li>\n<br>\n   <li>Show the first letter.<\/li>\n   <li>Say the letter name twice, the letter sound twice, and the letter name again (e.g., d\u2026d\u2026\/d\/\u2026\/d\/\u2026d).<\/li>\n   <li>Then put the first letter in the pocket chart. Have students guess what the word could be.<\/li>\n   <li>Chant the second verse: \n     <br><br>\n    <p><strong>&emsp;&emsp;&emsp;&emsp;Two little letters sitting in a tree<br>\n      &emsp;&emsp;&emsp;&emsp;Singing, \u201cChildren, children, you can\u2019t read me.\u201d<br>\n      &emsp;&emsp;&emsp;&emsp;Along come the children, quiet as can be<br>\n      &emsp;&emsp;&emsp;&emsp;And snap a letter right out of that tree.<\/strong><\/p>\n <br>\n   <\/li>\n \n   <li>Share the next letter and repeat the letter, sound, letter pattern (e.g., o\u2026o\u2026\/o\/\u2026\/o\/\u2026o).<\/li>\n   <li>Place the second letter in the pocket chart next to the first. Invite students to use both the sounds to guess what the word could be.<\/li>\n   <li>Chant the third verse:\n     <br><br>\n    <p><strong>&emsp;&emsp;&emsp;&emsp;One little letter sitting in a tree<br>\n      &emsp;&emsp;&emsp;&emsp;Singing, \u201cChildren, children, you can\u2019t read me.\u201d<br>\n      &emsp;&emsp;&emsp;&emsp;Along come the children, quiet as can be<br>\n      &emsp;&emsp;&emsp;&emsp;And snap a letter right out of that tree.<\/strong><\/p>\n  <br>\n   <\/li>\n \n   <li>Show the final letter and repeat the letter, sound, letter combination (e.g., g\u2026g\u2026\/g\/\u2026\/g\/\u2026g).<\/li>\n   <li>Place the final letter in the pocket chart to complete the word. <\/li>\n   <li>Have students blend the sounds together to make the word, e.g., &nbsp;\/d\/ \/o\/ \/g\/ dog!<\/li>\n   <li>Invite students to think of a sentence containing the word.<\/li>\n   <li>Share sentences and repeat the game again using another CVC word.<\/li>\n <\/ol>\n <p><strong class=\"Blue_hi-lite_noItalics\">Note:<\/strong> Later in the year, you may want to challenge your students by using digraphs (\u2018ch,\u2019 \u2018sh,\u2019 \u2018th\u2019) as the initial phoneme.
