Explain to students that you are going to use puppets to retell something that happened to yourself. (Substitute an experience of your own for your demonstration lesson.) <\/p>\n        <\/li>\n      <\/ul>\n      <p>\n        <em class=\"Blue_hi-lite\"><strong>Setting a Purpose<\/strong><\/em><br>\n      <\/p>\n      <ul>\n        <li>Establish the purpose for listening and viewing. Ask students to listen to your story to find out what happened to you.<\/li>\n      <\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n<div id=\"Section-Three\" class=\"section\">\n<br>\n\t<h2 id=\"DURING_MODELLING\" class=\"title\">DURING MODELLING<\/h2>\n\n\n      <ul>\n        <li>\n          <p>Retell a personal experience using the puppets, acting out events when appropriate. The following is an example of a possible retelling:<br>\n          <\/p>\n        <\/li>\n      <\/ul>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table is-style-regular\">\n\t\t\t<table border=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"5\" class=\"scripts\">\n        <tbody>\n\t\t\t\t\t<tr>\n          \t<td class=\"character\"><span class=\"Blue_hi-lite\">Lady Puppet: <\/span><\/td>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<td class=\"dialogue\">Chantelle and I went camping in Jasper Park.<br>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t(Girl puppet on one hand and lady puppet on the other.)<\/td>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/tr>\n\t\t\t\t\t<tr>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<td class=\"character\"><span class=\"Blue_hi-lite\">Girl Puppet: <\/span><\/td>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<td class=\"dialogue\">We set up the tent trailer. (Add actions.)<\/td>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/tr>\n\t\t\t\t\t<tr>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<td class=\"character\"><span class=\"Blue_hi-lite\">Lady: <\/span><\/td>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<td class=\"dialogue\">From our campsite we could see the snow-topped mountains and tall spruce trees.<\/td>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/tr>\n\t\t\t\t\t<tr>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<td class=\"character\"><span class=\"Blue_hi-lite\">Girl: <\/span><\/td>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<td class=\"dialogue\">We chopped wood for our fire. I looked out of the window and saw a bear in the moonlight. The bear was knocking over things.<br>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t(Replace girl puppet for bear puppet and show it crashing around in the campsite and chewing things. Bear rolls away the jar of honey.)<\/td>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/tr>\n\t\t\t\t\t<tr>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<td class=\"character\"><span class=\"Blue_hi-lite\">Lady: <\/span><\/td>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<td class=\"dialogue\">I stayed very still and hoped the bear wouldn&#8217;t check out our trailer. (Shiver.)<\/td>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/tr>\n\t\t\t\t\t<tr>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<td class=\"character\"><span class=\"Blue_hi-lite\">Girl: <\/span><\/td>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<td class=\"dialogue\">(Replace bear puppet for the girl puppet.) The next morning we looked over the campsite. Chairs had been tipped over and our cooler was by the trees.<\/td>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/tr>\n\t\t\t\t\t<tr>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<td class=\"character\"><span class=\"Blue_hi-lite\">Lady: <\/span><\/td>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<td class=\"dialogue\">We realized we&#8217;d forgotten to put the cooler in the car, but really there was nothing in it except for a small jar of honey.<\/td>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/tr>\n\t\t\t\t\t<tr>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<td class=\"character\"><span class=\"Blue_hi-lite\">Girl: <\/span><\/td>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<td class=\"dialogue\">We picked up the cooler and saw big tooth marks through one corner. We never found the jar of honey! (Add actions.)<\/td>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/tr>\n\t\t\t\t\t<tr>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<td class=\"character\"><span class=\"Blue_hi-lite\">Lady: <\/span><\/td>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<td class=\"dialogue\">We still use the cooler.<\/td>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/tr>\n\t\t\t\t\t<tr>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<td class=\"character\"><span class=\"Blue_hi-lite\">Girl: <\/span><\/td>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<td class=\"dialogue\">The teeth marks remind us to put the cooler away at night so we don&#8217;t meet any more bears in our campsite!<\/td>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/tr>\n      <\/tbody><\/table>\n\n<\/figure>\n\n<\/div>\n\n<div id=\"Section-Four\" class=\"section\">\n\n\t<h2 id=\"AFTER_MODELLING\" class=\"title\">AFTER MODELLING<\/h2>\n\n\n      <ul>\n        <li>Revisit the purpose for listening and viewing. Ask students to tell a partner about what happened. Then ask how you retold the story. Offer prompts:\n          <ul>\n            <li>Did I tell you everything that happened on our camping trip? Why not? Why do you think I picked that part?<\/li>\n            <li>Who told the story?<\/li>\n            <li>Had that really happened to them?<\/li>\n            <li>I talked, but how did I show what happened too? <br>\n              <br>\n            <\/li>\n          <\/ul>\n        <\/li>\n        <li>\n\n<p class=\"speach-bubble left\">Devonne listened to Ryan when he said, \u201cYou couldn\u2019t tell us everything that happened. You wouldn\u2019t remember.\u201d Devonne added, \u201cThe play would be too long as well.\u201d It\u2019s good to add to other people\u2019s ideas.<\/p>\n\nAs students talk, listen carefully to observe an occasion when one student added to another&#8217;s student\u2019s ideas. Use the opportunity to identify and reinforce a positive conversational strategy.<br>\n          <br><br><br><br><br>\n        <\/li>\n        <li>\n<p class=\"speach-bubble left\">Close your eyes and think of something you\u2019ve done that you could retell with puppets. It could be about playing with a friend, going on a trip, having a birthday party, swimming, anything that you\u2019ve done.<\/p>\n\n\nDuring centre time, ask students to think of an experience they could make into a puppet play.<br><br><br><br><br><br>\n          <br>\n        <\/li>\n        <li>\n<p class=\"speach-bubble left\">If two or three of you have shared the experience, like going to a party, or playing a game, then you can retell it together.<\/p>\n\nHave students to talk with a partner about their experiences.
