Why do you think \nyou were asked to turn out the \nlights? What do we do here in \nthe classroom to help save \nwater or paper or electricity? \nWhat else do you do at home?<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\tAsk students what they do at home or what we do in the classroom to help reduce waste. Record students\u2019 ideas in a class list. [Making connections] <\/li>\n\t\t\t<li>Offer prompts to stimulate oral sharing and discussions:\n\t\t\t<ul>\n\t\t\t<li>What do we recycle in our classroom?<\/li>\n\t\t\t<li>Where do we keep the recycling materials?<\/li>\n\t\t\t<li>What do we do about the lights when we leave a room?<\/li>\n\t\t\t<li>How do we tidy up at the end of the day? Why do we tidy up?<\/li>\n\t\t\t<li>What is one thing that you do in your home to help use less water?\n\t\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t\t<\/ul>\n\t\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t\t<li>Ask students to tell a partner what they do at home to reduce waste. Again, offer prompts:\n\t\t\t<ul>\n\t\t\t<li>What do you recycle at home?<\/li>\n\t\t\t<li>Who collects the things to be recycled?<\/li>\n\t\t\t<li>Where do you keep your recycled materials? <\/li>\n\t\t\t<li>Does someone tell you to turn off the water when you are brushing your teeth? Why do you think so?<\/li>\n\t\t\t<\/ul>\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tStudents can discuss in partners and then ask a few partners to share their ideas with the class. [Making connections]\n\t\t\t<br>\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t<\/li>\n<li><p class=\"speach-bubble left\">Think about what you have done at \nhome or at school to help keep litter out \nof the yard or off the floor, to reduce \nthe material we put into the garbage, or \nto save energy. Make a picture of \nsomething you do to reduce waste.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\tInvite students to paint or draw pictures of themselves doing something to reduce waste at home or at school.<\/li>\n\t\t\t<li>As students draw or paint, circulate and talk to them about their pictures. Encourage them to print an idea about their picture at the bottom or top of the piece of paper. You may ask students who need more support to dictate their ideas while you scribe them, then reread the scribed message with the student.\n\t\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t\t<li><p class=\"speach-bubble left\">What do you do to help \nreduce or reuse or pick up \nlitter? How do you do that? \nWhy do you do that?<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\tStudents can share their pictures with partners. Select a few students to share their pictures and writings with the class. Keep the discussion focused and on topic. \n\t\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t\t<\/ul>\n\n<\/div><div id=\"Section-Three\" class=\"section\">\n\n\t\t\t<h3 id=\"INTRODUCING_THE_INQUIRY_QUESTION\">INTRODUCING THE INQUIRY QUESTION<\/h3>\n\t\t\t<ul>\n\t\t\t<li><p class=\"speach-bubble left\">In the next few days we are \ngoing to think about what we can \ndo to make a difference in the \nworld so that it is a healthy \nenvironment for all living things. \nThis is a big topic, but there are \nlots of little things that each one \nof us can do to make a difference.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\tTell students that the class will be exploring the question \u201cHow can my actions make a difference?\u201d Explain that the class will be learning about how each person\u2019s actions can make a difference in how healthy and safe the world is for all living things.\n\t\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t\t<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Time: approximately 25\u201330 minutes Grouping: whole class, partners, and individual OPENING THE CONVERSATION Open the conversation about making a difference by connecting to your personal experiences in the classroom and at home to make the environment a safer and cleaner place for the world\u2019s plant, animal, and human life.
