{"id":1307,"date":"2021-12-09T21:18:50","date_gmt":"2021-12-10T02:18:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www3.scholastic.ca\/lpeyx-teaching-support\/?page_id=1307"},"modified":"2022-04-06T16:47:42","modified_gmt":"2022-04-06T20:47:42","slug":"concluding-the-unit","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www3.scholastic.ca\/lpeyx-teaching-support\/grade-1\/being-responsible-2\/concluding-the-unit\/","title":{"rendered":"Concluding the Unit"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div id=\"body\">\n\n\t\t\t\n<div id=\"Section-One\" class=\"section\">\n\n\n\t\t\t<p><strong>Time:<\/strong> approximately 30 minutes (can be completed in two 15-minute sessions)<br>\n\t\t\t<strong>Grouping:<\/strong> whole class and partners<\/p>\n\n\t<h3 id=\"What_Did_We_Learn\"><i>What Did We Learn?<\/i><\/h3>\n\t[Self-monitoring]<p>\n\t\t\t<\/p><ul>\n\t\t\t<li>Refer to the Rules and Responsibilities chart created throughout the unit to review the texts read and the reasons for rules and responsibilities demonstrated in these texts. <\/li>\n\t\t\t<\/ul>\n\t\t\t<ul>\n\t\t\t\t\n<li><p class=\"speach-bubble left\">I want you to think of three rules or\nresponsibilities which you learned about and why\nthey are necessary or important. Now face your\npartner. The Inside Circle is going to speak first.\nTell your partner what you learned about rules\nand responsibilities. (Provide one minute for\nsharing.) Now the Outside Circle is going to share\ntheir ideas with their partners. (Provide one\nminute for sharing.) Were your ideas the same or\ndifferent?<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\tHave students discuss the inquiry question: \u201cWhy do we need rules and responsibilities?\u201d Use the Inside\/Outside Circle strategy (half of the students form a circle facing out and the other students form a circle facing the inside circle) to allow students to share their ideas with a partner.<\/li>\n\t\t\t<\/ul>\n\t\t\t<ul>\n\t\t\t<li>Move the Outside Circle two students to the left. Repeat the above questions so students have the opportunity to share with another partner.\n\t\t\t<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t<h3 id=\"What_Can_I_Do\"><i>What Can I Do?<\/i><\/h3>\n\t\t\t[Self-monitoring]<p>\n\t\t\t<\/p><ul>\n\t\t\t<li>Have students work in pairs to observe either the playground at recess or the classroom throughout the day. Students watch for, and record, infractions of school and classroom rules. Clarify that the aim of this activity is not to report on particular individuals but to note and record the number of times a rule is broken. <\/li>\n\t\t\t<\/ul>\n\t\t\t<ul>\n\t\t\t<li>Invite students to share their findings. If a number of infractions were observed or a particular one observed several times, then work together to brainstorm ideas about what could be done to ensure these rules are followed at school. Suggestions might include:\n\t\t\t<ul>\n\t\t\t<li>make posters to display in the school hallways <\/li>\n\t\t\t<li>write and read announcements about the rules on the P.A. system <\/li>\n\t\t\t<li>create short commercials to be played on the P.A. system <\/li>\n\t\t\t<li>consider why the rule is not being followed and think of a \u2018better\u2019 rule to present to the principal and the Safe Schools Committee <\/li>\n\t\t\t<li>create a short skit or a Readers\u2019 Theatre presentation to share with other classes <\/li>\n\t\t\t<\/ul>\n\t\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t\t<\/ul>\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Time: approximately 30 minutes (can be completed in two 15-minute sessions) Grouping: whole class and partners What Did We Learn?
