You will have 15 minutes to invent a game that uses the equipment. Make sure everyone in our group gets to play your game. When you hear the signal, stop your game, collect your equipment, and join us in our whole group meeting area.

Open the conversation about rules and responsibilities by involving students in creating a game that incorporates rules. Organize the students into small groups of three or four to create their own game. Provide each group with one type of equipment (e.g., beanbags, balls, dice, scarves, paper, rulers and small balls, skipping ropes, etc.) and ask students to create and play a game using the equipment provided.

Invite groups to share their invented game and any rules they may have created for the game.

Why did you make up rules for your game? Who made up the rules? How did the rules help when playing the game? What do you think would have happened if there were no rules for your game?

Discuss why students created rules when playing their games.

Ensure students realize that the rules helped all the players to know what was allowed and not allowed. They also helped everyone play fairly and in the same way.

CONNECTING WITH PERSONAL EXPERIENCES

We follow rules when we play games. There are also rules that we follow at home, at school, and in places in our community. For example, when I go to the public library, I have to make sure I talk softly—yelling or talking loudly is not allowed. So rules are ways to behave or a set of laws that people are expected to follow.

Ask the students about rules they use in their daily lives. [Making connections]

Have students make connections to personal experiences with rules by asking the following questions:

What rules do you have in your life (e.g., at home, at school, in other settings)?

Who made these rules?

Why do you think these rules were created?

What do you think would happen if no one obeyed these rules?

Discuss responsibilities. Explain that responsibilities are everyday jobs or household tasks.
